Text macros let you drop your most-used phrases into a note in just a few keystrokes... while you’re pre-charting, while you’re recording, and even after the note has been generated. Your macros come straight from athenaOne, so the shortcuts you already use are ready to go in CarePilot.
Where to find your text macros
1. Click your profile icon in the top right corner of CarePilot and select Profile & Preferences.
Your profile menu is in the top right corner of CarePilot.
2. In the left-hand menu, under Customization, click Text Macros.
Text Macros lives under Customization in Profile & Preferences.
3.Here you’ll see every macro available to you, with the shortcut, the text it expands to, and the note section it’s designed for. Use the search bar to find a specific shortcut.
Your full macro library, synced from athenaOne.
Your macros come straight from Athena
CarePilot automatically ingests the text macros your organization has built in athenaOne. There’s nothing to set up and nothing to maintain in two places:
Managed in athenaOne — macros are created, edited, and deleted in Athena, not in CarePilot. Any changes your practice makes there flow into CarePilot automatically.
Always in sync — the Text Macros page shows when your library last synced. Need a brand-new macro right away? Click Refresh from Athena to pull the latest.
Refresh from Athena pulls in your practice’s latest macros on demand.
Good to know: macros can’t be added, modified, or deleted inside CarePilot — your athenaOne library is the single source of truth. If you need a new macro, ask whoever manages macros at your practice to add it in Athena.
How to use a macro
Use macros in CarePilot exactly the way you always have in Athena: click into any section of the note, type a period followed by your macro name, and pick the macro from the suggestions that appear. The full phrase drops right into the note.
Type “.” plus your macro name — CarePilot suggests matching macros as you type.
Each suggestion shows the shortcut, a preview of the text it expands to, and the note section it’s tagged for (like HPI, A&P, or INSTR).
Macros with fill-in fields
If a macro includes bracketed placeholders — like [A1c value] or [medications] — those fields drop in with the macro. When you record the visit and the details come up in conversation, CarePilot fills the bracketed sections in for you when the note is generated, so the specifics land in the right places without extra typing.
This macro expands with bracketed fields that CarePilot completes from the visit conversation.
Use them at any point in the visit:
While you’re pre-charting
Prepping the chart before the patient arrives? Drop macros into any section as you jot notes — history templates, exam scaffolds, or anything else you use routinely.
While you’re recording
Macros work in real time during the visit. While the ambient recording captures your conversation, you can pull a macro into the note — patient instructions, counseling language, or anything you’d rather not dictate.
Typing a macro into Patient Instructions mid-recording — note the timer running below.
The full instruction set lands in the note while the visit continues.
After the note is generated
Macros keep working once the note is generated. Editing a section, adding an attestation, filling in a follow-up — type your macro and keep moving.
Macros work during note editing, too — here, in the attestation of a generated note.
One shortcut, and the full attestation language is in place.
Text macros — fewer keystrokes, faster notes.
