The Charting Canvas (Canvas Mode) turns your CarePilot visit note into a living workspace. You can prep the chart before your patient arrives, interact with the note while you record, and let CarePilot weave everything — your pre-charted work and the visit conversation — into one comprehensive, longitudinal note that’s ready to send to athenahealth.
How to turn on the Charting Canvas
How to turn on the Charting Canvas
Before activating Charting Canvas, ensure you do not have any visits in the "recording" or "paused" state, as they can be impacted by switching modes.
1. Click your profile icon in the top right corner of CarePilot.
2. Open Profile & Preferences, then click Preferences in the left-hand menu.
3. Under Products & Features, switch on Use Charting Canvas. You can toggle it off the same way at any time.
Your changes save automatically — you’ll see “All changes saved” at the top of the page.
Pre-chart before the visit
Canvas Mode lets you prep the chart ahead of time. Patients with pre-charting in progress are flagged with a Pre-Charting badge right on your schedule, so you always know which visits are prepped.
Patients with charting underway show a Pre-Charting badge on your schedule.
Pull forward the patient’s most recent note
Pull forward the patient’s most recent note
Open the encounter and click the Pull forward [date] note button in the pre-charting banner. CarePilot imports the note content from the patient’s most recent visit directly into today’s chart.
One click imports note content from the patient’s most recent visit.
You’ll see a green Success — prior note pulled forward confirmation, and the note sections fill in with the prior visit’s content, ready for you to review and edit.
The prior note’s content lands in today’s chart, ready to review.

Want more control? Use Pull Forward from Prior Visit to choose a specific closed CarePilot encounter — and import the whole visit or just the individual sections you need (for example, only the Assessment/Plan).
Choose a prior visit, then import everything or just the sections you want.
First time seeing the patient? Pull their note from Athena
First time seeing the patient? Pull their note from Athena
If the patient has never been seen in CarePilot, you can still prep the visit: pull forward the patient’s most recent note directly from athenahealth. Notes coming from Athena are labeled FROM ATHENA in the pull-forward window.
No prior CarePilot visits? Pull the most recent note straight from Athena.
Work in the note while you record
Canvas Mode keeps the whole chart interactive during the visit. While the ambient recording captures your conversation, you can work directly in the note — everything you add is woven in when the note is generated.
Type into the note while the recording runs — the ambient scribe fills in the rest.
While recording, you can:
Review and interact with the patient's longitudinal chart data

Update the problem list and add discussed diagnoses to the visit — open the Problems panel from the longitudinal chart, add a note to a problem (e.g., “hip pain flared on trip, OTC NSAIDs”), and click Add to visit.
Update the problem list and add discussed problems to the visit in real time. Diagnoses added from the chart appear with their ICD-10 codes under Dx + Orders.
Review active medications and more.

Generate one comprehensive note
When you end the recording, CarePilot weaves your pre-charted work and the visit conversation together into a single, comprehensive longitudinal note — history pulled forward, your jotted notes, and everything discussed in the room.
Pre-charted content and the conversation come together in one longitudinal note.
Use Amelia, your clinical copilot
Canvas Mode also gives you access to Amelia, CarePilot’s clinical copilot.
Amelia can fetch chart data, edit your note, place orders, and much more.
What all can Amelia do?
What all can Amelia do?

Add orders — search and place medication, lab, imaging, and referral orders.
Add ICD-10 codes — search diagnoses and add codes to the encounter.

Fill out forms — auto-fill PDF clinical forms with patient data.
Record on the go with the mobile app
Canvas Mode works away from your desk, too. With CarePilot’s mobile app you can run the entire visit from your phone.
Set up the visit and start recording right from your phone. Choose what happens when the note finishes: send it, add more, or hand it off.
