What Learn Format Does
CarePilot doesn't just generate your notes — it learns how you like to write them. Once you show it an example of a section formatted exactly the way you want, CarePilot takes a snapshot of that structure, wording, and level of detail, and applies that same style to future notes of the same type.
Ways to Edit a Note Before You Teach It
Before you hit Learn Format, you'll usually want to shape the section into exactly the format you want CarePilot to learn. There are four ways to do that, and you can mix and match:
Edit the text directly. Every section is just free text — click in and type, delete, or restructure it the old-fashioned way, the same as editing a Word document.
Highlight text for the inline edit bar. Select any text in a section and a small dropdown appears right there, with quick commands like Condense or Add detail, plus a free-text box ("Ask anything about the selection...") if you want to give a more specific instruction.
Use the Amelia edit bar at the bottom. Click into the bar next to the recording controls at the bottom of the chart, and it expands into a full-width bar. Type an instruction there ("Ask CarePilot to draft or edit...") and Amelia adjusts the core text of the section for you.
Use whichever combination gets the section looking exactly the way you want — that's what CarePilot is going to learn from.
How to Teach CarePilot Your Format
Get the section looking exactly how you want it, using any of the editing methods above.
Select Learn Format at the top right of the section (next to the thumbs-up/down icons).

Select Save Example.
CarePilot tracks how many examples you've saved for each section — you'll see an Examples learned count in the same window. For best results, save 3–5 examples per section before expecting consistent output.
Keep Your Examples Template-Specific
This is the part that's easy to miss: Learn Format examples are scoped to the section and the template/visit type they came from — not applied globally across everything you chart. If you teach CarePilot your Medicare Annual Wellness Exam History of Present Illness, that example won't get blended into a routine follow-up visit's HPI, as long as you save it while that specific template is selected.
The practical takeaway: teach examples per template, not just once. If you regularly document a left hip complaint, save HPI and Assessment/Plan examples specifically from a left-hip visit, so CarePilot learns the laterality and phrasing that's specific to that complaint — not lumped in with your general orthopedic examples. Same goes for Annual Wellness Exams versus routine visits, or any other template where you want the language to stay distinct rather than blend together.
Tips
Save 3–5 examples per section for best results — one example is a start, not a finish.
Keep your examples consistent with each other. Contradicting examples (one bulleted, one paragraph-style, for the same section/template) send CarePilot mixed signals and lead to inconsistent output.
Re-teach a section any time your preferred format changes — Learn Format isn't a one-time setup, it's something you can revisit whenever your style evolves.
